Protecting Waterways, Protecting History
At Earth+Us, we're passionate about environmental stewardship and safeguarding our heritage. So, it's been a true privilege to partner with the Canal & River Trust on a project that embodies both these values.
The Canal & River Trust is the charity entrusted with the care of over 2,000 miles of waterways across England and Wales. These waterways are more than just bodies of water; they're vital ecosystems teeming with wildlife, corridors rich in biodiversity, and fundamental threads woven into the fabric of Britain's history.
From the iconic waterways of the Industrial Revolution to serene canals winding through idyllic countryside, the Trust's canals and rivers tell the story of our nation. And because of this, the Trust’s protection remit is vast. They protect a rich tapestry of wildlife, from otters and kingfishers to wetland plants and spawning fish. They also safeguard countless historical structures like bridges, tunnels, and canalside buildings, ensuring these remnants of the past are preserved for future generations.
That's why we've been working closely with the Trust to update their Environment, Consents and Heritage Oversight (ECHO) process. This ensures that all the Trust's activities, from maintenance works to community events, are meticulously assessed for potential environmental and heritage impacts. By proactively identifying risks, the Trust can minimise potential risks while maximising the positive impact of their work, ensuring the waterways remain healthy habitats for wildlife, places of recreation for communities, and testaments to our rich industrial past.
Working alongside the Trust's dedicated team has been an inspiring experience. Their commitment to protecting these irreplaceable spaces is unwavering, and we're proud to play a part in supporting their vital work. After all, healthy waterways are not just beautiful; they're essential for wildlife, recreation, and even flood management. By ensuring their continued health, we ensure the health of the communities and ecosystems that depend on them.
Working on this project has been incredibly rewarding. We're proud to play a part in safeguarding these vital waterways and the stories they hold.
